Ghost by Slash Guitar Solo Transcription / Tab

One of my students recently asked me to learn the tune Ghost by Slash. While it was fairly easy to find a decent transcription of the main riff and chords it was hard to find a good accurate transcription of the guitar solo. So I created my own transcription of the guitar solo from Ghost by Slash.

Apart from just giving this transcription with my student I decided to share it online by creating a YouTube video for it too. So for fans of the tune who want to learn to play the solo from Ghost check out the video below and the transcription. There’s also a PDF version you can download here.

The solo is based around the C# minor pentatonic scale with the majority of it using pattern 1 (or position 1) of this scale. However it does venture out of this pattern to dip lower in pitch into pattern 5 of the C# minor pentatonic scale in bars 5 and 6 plus it goes higher to pattern 2 in bars 7, 8 and 9. Watch the lesson video to ensure that you’re suing the correct fretboard fingering to prevent you running out of fingers when shifting patterns.

Slash also adds an extra note of D# (fret 11) in bar 3 to break out of the C# minor pentatonic scale. Also look out for the double stop bends in bars 2 and 7 which is typical of his style.

Overall the guitar solo from Ghost is a great example of Slash’s sped up style of blues licks that he uses to create solos. Many of his solos has been played this way in his career form the classic Guns n Roses album Appetite for Destruction and beyond.
