Riptide – Vance Joy
One of the biggest songs of recent years and one of my most popular YouTube guitar lesson videos. Even though it’s originally performed on ukulele the main 3 chords are easy to play on guitar too.
Bittersweet – Hoodoo Gurus
Going back to the 80s for this pop/rock band who churned out many catchy singles with great guitar hooks. The intro to this song is a great example of the CAGED chord system in action.
My Happiness – Powderfinger
Powderfinger’s hit from 2000 features acoustic guitars mixed with a chorus/vibrato guitar part that creates hummable melodies throughout the song. This same quirky guitar sound is also used for the solo.
It’s Only Natural – Crowded House
For those who are counting this is really tune number 9! Another earworm from Crowded House though not one of their hits. Can they write a bad tune? I don’t think so! This one features a magic mixolydian based riff in the intro and outro too.
